Furniture design that creates an experience

David J. Lunin offers a fresh eye to the familiar

David J. Lunin’s furniture designs follow a natural progression from his expertly constructed 18th-Century reproductions to unexpected twists of familiar designs that ultimately create a unique experience for the end user. Perhaps the best way to describe his furniture design is to say that the furniture makes you look twice.

When he proposed to his wife, Angela, he presented her with a handmade mahogany table. At first glance, it looks like an impeccably made piece of furniture. However, upon closer look, you will see carvings of their interlocking initials and ring and diamond shapes. What looks like a coffee table is actually a giant ring box with a top that opens to storage space.

The Surreal Collection

Lunin’s well-known Surreal Collection features unexpected, tasteful twists and perfect plays on perspective. Both functional and entertaining, Lunin has created new expectations for handcrafted furniture.

The Perspective Chest, for instance, looks like a chest of drawers positioned at an angle. Move closer and you’ll realize that you’re staring at the piece head-on. What you thought was a chest of drawers actually opens to become a cabinet with an adjustable shelf. On one side of the cabinet drawers, Lunin built fake drawers with mind-blowingly precise angles that converge at a vanishing point 15 feet away.

He adds subtle design elements to recognizable forms, such as the kneeling coffee table with ball and claw legs that extend inward and the Yin and Yang three-legged Windsor style table with an inlaid top that plays off positive/negative swirls and circles.
